Niti Aayog for an independent body to improve rail safety

According to a Niti Aayog note, accidents due to derailments and at level crossings accounted for 90 per cent of total accidents.

Niti Aayog has suggested the establishment of Railway Safety Authority – an independent body with statutory power to develop better safety provisions for the railways.

The national transporter has been witnessing increase in deaths due to derailments and accidents.

According to a Niti Aayog note, accidents due to derailments and at level crossings accounted for 90 per cent of total accidents.

The note was prepared by its member Bibek Debroy and OSD Kishore Desai.

The report said about 87 per cent of all accidents was the result of human failure, while railway staff failure accounted for 46 per cent and 41 per cent failure of road users.

The Rail Safety Authority would be in sync with global best practices. Railway has even been asked to consider looking into the current timetable.
