GST roll out from July 1, don't be misled by rumours: Govt

The CBEC in coordination with state governments have increased their outreach programmes so as to reach the last trader.

Good and Services Tax (GST) will be rolled out from July 1 and preparations are in full swing for its smooth implementation across the country, the government said as it sought to dispel rumours of a possible delay.

The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) in coordination with state governments have increased their outreach programmes so as to reach the last trader, according to the finance ministry statement.

However, there were demands from certain sections of the industry for a deferment of the new regime. Further, West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra had proposed to postpone GST by a month.

The GST Council comprising various state governments had decided tax rates for more than 1,200 goods and 500 services and fitted them in either of 5, 12, 18 or 28 per cent slab in the last three weeks.
