New telecom policy by February 2018: Manoj Sinha

The draft policy is likely to be finalised by end of December.

The Telecom Ministry is expected to finalise the new national telecom policy by February next year. Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha stated that high-level committee is working on it to finalise the draft policy by end of December and place it for public comments.

Talking about the BharatNet project, Communications Minister said that it is going on at a faster pace, and telecom service providers such as Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone are ready to provide services in rural areas.

The first phase of BharatNet project to connect 1 lakh village panchayats with high-speed broadband should be completed by the end of November.

“Airtel has shown interest in 10,000 GPs for taking 1 Gbps connectivity on lease, while Reliance Jio, Vodafone and Idea are interested in taking 100 Mbps connectivity on lease in about 30,000, 2,000 and 1,000 GPs, respectively,” BusinessLine quoted Sinha as saying.

The BharatNet project will help generate around 5 lakh jobs once it is launched in all panchayats, he added.
