Be ready for e-way bill, Adhia's appeal to industry

Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has asked businesses and transporters to enrol for the new system.

The e-way bill is all set to be rolled out from April 1.

Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has asked businesses and transporters to enrol for the new system.

Currently, 11 lakh businesses are registered on the GST Network portal.

“But I am not too sure whether traders, dealers and transporters are still ready. I would like to appeal to them to register themselves on the E-way bill portal...they should not then tell us that we didn’t inform them,” he was quoted as saying, at the Foundation Day of the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN).

The e-way bill for intra-state movement will be implemented after two weeks.

“We will announce the schedule at least three days in advance, but not immediately because we want to observe how the e-way bill portal functions for inter-state movement of goods,” Finance Secretary said.

The businesses involved in inter-state transportation of goods worth over Rs 50,000 through road, railways, airways and vessels will be required to file e-way bill.

Following GST implementation from July 1, the requirement of carrying e-way bill was postponed, pending IT network readiness.

The GST Network had been conducting trial runs for the e-way bill system since January 17, during which a whopping 2.84 lakh such permits were issued on the portal.

The e-way bill started on January 16 on a trial basis and it was to be launched mandatorily from February. But, GST Network suffered glitches and had to be postponed by the government till further notice.

However, GSTN chairman Ajay Bhushan Pandey expressed confidence that the implementation of e-way bill will be smooth this time.
