State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is dealing with another salary delay, with the ailing telecom firm expected to credit employees’ wages for September 15-20 days late. “There isn’t enough money coming in from internal accruals. Even though BSNL is generating about ₹1,400 crore per month, this is not adequate to cover the wages, as a major portion of the proceeds is required for operational expenses and statutory payments,” a source close to the development told BusinessLine. “The company is definitely staring at another salary default,” added the source. The salaries are usually deposited in employees’ accounts on the last working day of the month but that has not happened four times since February this year. Employees continued to hope till Monday evening but salaries were not credited to their account. Moreover, it is BSNL’s foundation day on Tuesday. The employees in city are planning to hold lunch hour demonstration on Tuesday against delay in payment. The salary for August was paid on September 19. This was the longest delay since BSNL first defaulted in payment of salaries for the month February. The date was missed in some of the following months too. BSNL is not just delaying salaries but the monthly instalments and premium amount deducted directly from the pay are not being deposited to banks or insurance companies, said union sources. This has added to employees’ problems. Non-payment of instalments has affected their credit score with banks, said employees.
